As of January 1, 2010, it’s against the law to use hand-held cellphones and other hand-held communication and entertainment devices while driving on BC roads. A province-wide awareness campaign led by ICBC, the government and police, will kick off this week, with ads running in daily and community newspapers. Under the law you may not: Operate, view or hold hand-held cellphones or other electronic devices
Any violation of the law will net drivers a $167 fine. If a driver is caught dialing, texting or emailing, three points will also be added to their record.
The regulations go one step further for new drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP), who are prohibited from using all hand held and hands-free devices while driving, including while receiving formal training.. GLP drivers will be fined $167 and receive three points for any offence under the new legislation.
