GLP Instructor Course Schedule

Individuals currently holding a valid Instructor's Licence may upgrade their licence in order to conduct more advanced driver education.

GLP designation

Enables the instructor to conduct an ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course which includes the theory and practical components of the approved course

Also permits the conduct of theory training offered outside of an approved course

Prerequisites:

Completion of a five (5) day GLP Instructor's Course

Theory designation

Enables the instructor to conduct theory (in-class) training.

NOTE:  This does not permit the conduct of an ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course.  An instructor must obtain a GLP designation in order to do so.

Prerequisites:

Completion of a Defensive Driving Course for Instructors at an authorized Instructor Training Facility

High Class (1-4 designation)

Enables the instructor to conduct training to those wishing to obtain a class 1, 2, 3 or 4 British Columbia Driver's Licence.  Description of Licence Types

Enables the instructor to conduct training to those wishing to obtain a class 1, 2, 3 or 4 British Columbia Driver's Licence.  Description of Licence Types

Currently, new applications for a high class designation do not allow for individuals to obtain class 2, 3 or 4 as separate designations.  An individual must apply for a class 1 designation which automatically gives an instructor a class 1 through 4 designation

Prerequisites:

Must be at least 19 years of age
Have held a class 1 driver's licence for a period of 3 years; and have held a class 5 driver's licence for at least 5 years
Must complete an additional 40 hours of instructor training at an authorized Instructor Training Facility

In addition to submitting a completed Application for a British Columbia Driver Training Instructor's Licence and $15.00 fee, a Completion Certificate issued by the instructor training facility is required in order to obtain a duplicate instructor's licence that includes the appropriate designation upgrade.  This certifies that the applicant has taken the appropriate training required to obtain the particular designation.

If the applicant is applying to have a 'GLP' designation added to his or her instructor's licence, a Graduated Licensing Program Instructor Course Completion Certificate (MV2488) must be included
If the applicant is applying to have a 'theory' designation added to his or her instructor's licence, you will usually receive a certificate issued by the BC Safety Council stating that the individual has completed a 'Defensive Driving Course for Instructors'
If the applicant is applying to have a class 1-4 designation added to his or her instructor's licence, a Driver Training Instructor's Course Completion Certificate must be included
