An individual interested in obtaining an original British Columbia Driver Training Instructor's Licence must meet a number of prerequisites as defined in Division 27 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.

There are three stages to the Driver Training Instructor Licensing process. You must complete the first two stages prior to attending an Instructor Training Course at a Certified Instructor Training Facility.

Stage 1:

Contact Driver Training and Assessment Standards by phone or complete the on-line Driver Training Instructor Pre-Approval form in order for our Licensing Representatives to verify the following information:

• You must not have any outstanding debts owing to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia or to the Province of British Columbia (Motor Vehicle Fines)
• You must hold a valid British Columbia Driver's Licence and have less than 10 demerit points, within the past 2 years, on your driving record
• You must have the required driving experience for the class of Driver Training Instructor's Licence you are applying for, as set out in section 27.07(1)(c) of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations (Proof of experience may be requested)
• You must be 19 years of age

Stage 2:

Once the Stage 1 requirements have been met, an application package will be sent to you including the following:

• A medical evaluation form which must be completed by your family physician who must be a resident of, and is licensed to practice in, the Province of British Columbia. The completed medical evaluation form must be returned to this office, to be reviewed and approved by our Medical Advisor
• A Criminal Record search form to be completed by the RCMP or Municipal Police Detachment, and the original returned to this office for review and approval
• A Driver Training Instructor's Licence application form must be completed by you and returned to this office

Stage 3 (Final Stage):

Upon receipt and approval of the completed application forms, as indicated in Stage 2, we will notify you in writing, advising you to proceed with the following:

• To attend a Driver Training Instructor Facility and complete an Approved Driver Training Instructor Course
• A list of approved Driver Training Instructor Facilities will be provided

Once you have successfully completed the Driver Training Instructor's Course, you must submit the original copy of a completed Driver Training Instructor Course Completion Certificate (MV2499) (provided by the Training Facility) along with a $30.00 licensing fee; cheque made payable to ICBC.

Your application would then be processed and you will be issued a British Columbia Driver Training Instructor's Licence, valid for a period of (2) years.

Driver Training Instructors can only deliver training to the paying public who are enrolled at a licensed driver training school.

When do I have to renew my Instructor's Licence?

Approximately (3) three months prior to the expiry of your instructor's licence, a renewal package will be sent to you for completion.

Can I renew my Instructor's Licence on-line?

An applicant can complete the forms necessary for renewal on-line; however, the completed forms must be printed and manually submitted to ICBC through the mail.
