  Graduated licensing program

The Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) was initiated in British Columbia on August 1, 1998.

Its objectives are to reduce exposure to risks and improve driving behaviour, skills, attitudes and motivation for new drivers and motorcycle riders. The driver training industry is a key component in the education of new drivers, and the program model was developed in consultation with the industry. B.C.'s GLP is one of the best graduated licensing programs in North America because of the comprehensive program development undertaken.

GLP has completely revamped driver training and testing for new drivers in BC, including introducing a second road test and revising the existing knowledge and road tests as well as producing new driving guides.

Driver training curriculums

The development of a driver training curriculum set standards for the driver training industry who wanted to offer ICBC-approved driver education courses. A large portion of the industry now teaches the approved courses which requires additional training for driver training instructors.

GLP has created a major opportunity for the driver training industry in B.C. to help raise the bar of new driver competency.
