All Driver Training Schools operating in British Columbia (BC) are required by law to be licensed by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Also, all instructors conducting driver training at licensed schools must hold a valid BC Driver Training Instructor's Licence issued by ICBC.

There are currently over 400 Licenced Driver Training Schools operating in British Columbia. The services provided vary from school to school; Your challenge is to choose a school that meets your needs.

Schools offer one or a combination of the following types of training:

Passenger Vehicle

ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course
  Non-approved driver training (practical and/or theory - Class 5/7)
Motorcycle
  practical and/or theory - Class 6/8
Commercial Vehicle (practical and/or theory - Class 1-4)
Air Brakes (practical and/or theory)

Do your research

Remember that you are making an investment in your future. When choosing a driver training school, do not be afraid to ask questions. Common questions that you should ask are:

  1. Is your school licensed? Are your instructors licensed? Ask to see the licenses.
  2. Can I see a written policy of your rates (including all charges), hours, number of people in a training vehicle and refunds? The school must provide this to you.
  3. Does your school offer an ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course?
  4. Can I see a course outline?
  5. Do you use various methods of instruction (e.g., one-on-one, classroom groups, etc.)?
  6. How experienced are your instructors? How much recent training have they had?
  7. How do you involve parents/guardians or qualified supervisor education?
  8. How do you keep your practice vehicles safe and well maintained?

  9.

Do you have a vehicle with standard transmission if I want to learn to drive one?
10.

What do I need to have/bring/do before starting your course (i.e., type of clothing, equipment, gear, etc.)?

11. If pursuing a commercial licence, what types of vehicles do you use for your training (i.e., type, size and whether vehicle is of older or newer technology)?
12. If pursuing a commercial licence, do you offer air brake training in conjunction with commercial vehicle training?
13. If pursuing an air brake endorsement or Class 6/8 driver's licence, does your school offer Air brake or Motorcycle Skills Assessment (MSA) Certification?
14. Finally, ask other people: Have you heard good things about the school?

Important Tip: Never provide a Driver Training School with your security keyword.

A security keyword is the word (such as your mother's maiden name) you provide to an ICBC Customer Service Representative to confirm your identity prior to accessing driving record information. Your driving record is considered personal information and the school is not entitled to this information and therefore, schools should not be asking you to provide them with your keyword.
