Approved Driver Training at a Glance

  • Formal Approved Driver Education courses are approved and meet ICBC's curriculum standards—Standards are set for the driver training industry who want to offer ICBC-approved driver education courses. A large portion of the industry now teaches the approved course, which requires additional training for driver training instructors. This has created a major opportunity for the driver training industry in BC to help raise the bar of new driver competency
  • Training provided—Consists of practical (in-vehicle) and theory (classroom) sessions
  • Learn by doing—In-class group exercises actively involve students
  • Classroom work—Classroom (minimum 16 hours) is reinforced by in-car practice (minimum 12 hours)
  • Assessments—There is a mid-point assessment and a final assessment
  • Receive 2 credits towards high school graduation—2 credits towards high school graduation may be awarded upon successful completion of an ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course
  • 6 month reduction of the novice stage—New drivers who successfully complete an ICBC-Approved Driver Education Course in the learner stage and remain violation free and at-fault crash-free for the first 18-months of their novice stage can receive a 6 month reduction of the novice period

New drivers who do not take approved driver training are required to wait the full waiting period (24 months) before they are eligible to apply for a full privilege driver’s licence and exit GLP.
