Driving School Inspections, another facet of Driver Training & Assessment Standards is responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance within the driver training industry of British Columbia.

This page defines the role of ICBC Driving School Inspectors and the types of support services they provide to schools and other facilities delivering driver education in British Columbia.

What is the role of a Driving School Inspector?

Driving School Inspectors are authorized to inspect licensed driver training schools and facilities, instructors and the delivery of approved courses to ensure compliance with legislative and policy requirements.  In addition, they provide guidance and information to help and educate the driver training industry in the conduct of driver education to British Columbians.  Driving School inspections are one way to maintain standards of quality within the driver training industry.

Driving School Inspectors are legislated under Section 27.06(5) of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations and requires Driver Training Schools to permit ICBC to inspect their facilities, course delivery, student records and equipment (e.g., driver training vehicles).

Inspections are scheduled on a periodic basis; however, inspections may be initiated at any time.  If ICBC receives a complaint from a member of the public concerning a Driver Training School or concerns over the operation of a Driver Training School an inspection may be required.

Record Keeping

Those providing driver training in British Columbia are required to keep and maintain certain records associated with their students and those employed by the training facility to provide driver instruction and assessments.  It is the inspector's reponsibility to ensure that these records are being kept and maintained as defined in Section 27.06 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations and ICBC policy.

Course Evaluation

Evaluations of driver training courses are conducted from time to time to ensure that these courses meet the requirements of an Approved Course and are being conducted as intended.  This involves the evaluation of the theory (classroom) and practical (in-car) components of approved courses.

Driving School Inspectors will provide valuable feedback and will discuss with the facility on ways to improve the conduct of their driver training program(s).

Complaints/Concerns

Driving School Inspectors are responsible for following-up on complaints received from those individuals who have received driver training instruction from an authorized Driver Training School/Facility.  Inspectors also address various concerns received by the general public and the driver training industry.

Investigation of complaints or concerns are directed by Driver Training & Assessment Standards and are reviewed thoroughly prior to any action being taken.

How to Contact a Driving School Inspector
